What is a Skid Steer Backhoe Attachment?

A skid steer backhoe attachment is a hydraulically operated arm with a toothed bucket that attaches to your skid steer. It’s a smaller and simpler version of the digging arm you have seen on the back of a backhoe loader.

You’ll notice that on an actual backhoe loader there are two arms which pivot against each other, while on smaller skid steer backhoe attachment there is only one arm and the bucket. The difference is made up by the skid steer loader arms.

Because you can lift the skid steer loader arms, tilt the attachment, and reposition the skid steer so easily, only one arm is required on the skid steer backhoe attachment.

How Does A Skid Steer Backhoe Attachment Work?

The skid steer backhoe attachment operates with a single cylinder mounted on the back of the attachment. This cylinder is typically around 31/2” in diameter with a 20” stroke. The cylinder is secured to the top of the backhoe attachment on one end, and to a pivoting linkage connected to the bucket on the other.

When you operate your auxiliary hydraulics to extend the cylinder, the backhoe bucket curls in to dig the earth. Accordingly, when you retract the hydraulic cylinder, the bucket curls back outwards to dump the earth in the bucket.

Given that this attachment is solely operated by hydraulics, you do not need any electrical hookup. You must have auxiliary hydraulics, but there are no specific requirements for flow. This attachment works very well with low flow hydraulics. Lastly, this attachment has a universal skid steer mount, making it compatible with nearly any full size skid steer on the market.

What about the bucket?

You can choose which bucket you want for your backhoe attachment right on the product page. All of them come with replaceable cast teeth so you can always keep your bucket in like new condition.

Strong cast teeth are a must for backhoe attachments because they are often used to break hard ground. These teeth allow the bucket to penetrate hard ground easily which gives the backhoe bucket an advantage over many other digging methods.

You can choose between 9” 12” 18” and 24” buckets for your skid steer backhoe attachment.
