Collection: Skid Steer Cold Planer

Skid Steer Cold Planer

Using your skid steer to repair asphalt and concrete can be a lot more cost efficient than running a large milling machine. Additionally your skid steer is better suited for smaller jobs and maneuvering in tighter spaces. Being sure you match up the right cold planer to your skid steer and expected scope work is essential for proper operation.

High Flow and Low Flow Skid Steer Cold Planers

Skid steer cold planers aren’t reserved only for high flow skid steers. Many cold planer manufacturers build low flow cold planers that are just as capable as their high flow counterparts.

Blue Diamond Attachments for example offers 12” and 16” cold planer designed to be used with skid steers with as low as 15GPM auxiliary hydraulic flow at 2000 PSI. Although, if you want a wider model, or the ability to go deeper than 5”, you’ll need higher hydraulic flow.

High flow skid steer cold planers are offered in up to 48” widths and 6” cutting depths. These higher flow models can be up to 1500 pounds heavier, and may require up to 3500 PSI to effectively drive 90 teeth rather than the 30 used on low flow models.

Severe Duty Skid Steer Cold Planers

Severe duty cold planers are built tougher, bigger and heavier. To run one of these units you would be looking at a minimum auxiliary hydraulic flow of 24 gallons per minute at 2000 PSI, limiting usage to high flow models only.

In exchange you can expect to cut up to 8” in depth with over 100 teeth on some models. The higher weight and tougher build results in less attachment vibration while operating.

Cold Planer Side Shift

Blue Diamonds severe duty cold planer models come standard with hydraulic side shift. Although this option is available on some standard duty cold planer models, the low flow cold planers need to be adjusted manually.

Cold Planer Water Kits and Teeth

Cold Planer cutting teeth are designed to rotate in their holders. It’s important that the teeth are not prevented from rotation due to dust and debris in order to extend the life of the teeth.

This is one reason why some customers choose to purchase the optional water kit. The water helps to keep the dust and debris down extending the life of the teeth and teeth holders while increasing production.

Check manufacturers recommendations, but often teeth need to be visually inspected every 30 minutes of use.
