As of the past few years, some of the greatest advancements in the skid steer attachment market have been in grading attachments.

Gone are the days that you have to do your finish grading with the back of your bucket. Modern grading attachments have the ability to integrate GPS, lasers and automatic features.

Basic skid steer grading attachments

Not all grading jobs are the same, and not all skid steer grading attachments are built equally. Rough grades are best done with a larger blade to move more earth at once, while your finish grade needs a more precise blade and finish.

Rough grading can be completed with a bucket or dozer blade. A six way dozer blade offers the most advantage over a bucket as the additional articulation of the blades allows for more precise grading.

More advanced skid steer grading attachments

When it comes to getting a precise grade, a laser assistance set up is often preferred by our customers. Not only does it add precision, but it’s more affordable than fully automatic grading set ups.

With a laser assisted skid steer grading set up, the operator sets up a laser transmitter outside the skid steer which emits a laser to be used as a level. The skid steer then has a fixed pole on the blade which carries a laser receiver. The skid steer operator watches the laser receiver and manually adjusted the blade up and down to end up with a precise grade.

The next level of automation is referred to as a 2D “Machine Control Ready” system. This set up works very similar to the “laser assisted” discussed above with the exception that the blade will articulate its self up and down to maintain the proper grade without input from the skid steer operator.

And the final level automation is is 3D “Machine Control Ready” system. In this system, you download files into your skid steer/blade. The blade then articulates its self based on its GPS position to obtain a very precise and varied grade.
